After two and a half years of BBYO Australia as a whole coming together virtually, our two chapters, BBYO Sydney and BBYO Melbourne, accompanied by keen teens from other cities around Australia, were finally able to be together in person!

My chapter, BBYO Sydney, was founded in early 2020, two years after BBYO Melbourne, and our chapter has always loved being able to learn from our siblings down in Melbourne. To finally be in a room all together celebrating the last Shabbat of the Jewish year was incredible. 

Aunque los adolescentes de Sídney tuvieron que levantarse al amanecer para llegar al aeropuerto y llegar a Melbourne a tiempo, desde el momento en que entramos en el edificio de la UJEB nos sentimos como en casa. Sentimos cómo se unía el espíritu de todo el grupo. El sonido de todo el grupo gritando la letra de las canciones que nos unieron y ver a todo el mundo bailando fue increíble. 

The weekend was jam packed with activities but every single moment was amazing. We started the weekend with super fun icebreakers that encouraged all of us to get to know each other a bit better and learn a bit more about each other. This was followed by Shabbat activities, which allowed us to choose what we wanted to do to make sure that we as a group were ready for Shabbat. From Challah baking, Shabbat decorating, and the iconic Shabbat plays to my personal favourites of IC Shuk merch designing and Shabbatograms (letters that you could write to friends, which were put on their place at their tables at Shabbat lunch), everyone had a blast and worked together to ensure that we had the best Shabbat ever. We continued the day with an incredible program run by the BBYO Melbourne board about the power of teens in today's world! 

Then it was time to get ready for Shabbat and we started off with a Shabbaton favourite of Shabbat photos. Kabbalat Shabbat was everything that we could have asked for, sitting in a circle with everyone singing and sharing what Shabbat means to them was very moving. I personally loved singing Hinei Ma Tov, specifically after the mods explained that this song was about how amazing it is to be with all your brothers, sisters, and siblings, something that could not have been more appropriate. We continued the night with a lovely Shabbat dinner filled with iconic Australian chants and songs. For me, a personal highlight of the convention was walking into dinner to find a placemat with a special message for each of us from other BBYO teens all over the world. After dinner, we had a super interesting program about the development and creation of Israel, getting taken through a ‘museum’ of the different parts of Israeli history. This was followed by Shabbat board games, where I watched multiple games of shesh besh and a particularly intense game of Articulate that may or may not have lasted till 1am. 

A pesar de haber dormido muy poco, el sábado todos estábamos muy emocionados por el día que teníamos por delante. Empezamos la jornada dividiéndonos en grupos más pequeños y yendo a diferentes sinagogas de Melbourne. Me asignaron al grupo que fue a la sinagoga sefardí y tuve la increíble oportunidad de asistir a un servicio sefardí, algo muy diferente a lo que estoy acostumbrado. Tras el servicio, pudimos bajar y ver la Torá más de cerca, mientras nos explicaban las diferencias entre las sinagogas sefardíes y ashkenazíes. Fue una oportunidad increíble para vivir algo fuera de lo habitual y me ha hecho sentir aún más pasión por el pluralismo en nuestra comunidad. Luego regresamos al centro para almorzar. Nos dieron la opción de quedarnos en el centro y participar en un programa o salir y pasar un par de horas con la familia y los amigos. Decidí quedarme en el centro, donde tuvimos un programa fantástico sobre nuestra identidad y la relación entre esta y el periodo de las Grandes Fiestas. Cuando todos regresaron de sus actividades fuera del centro, disfrutamos de una encantadora Seudá Shlishit en la que nos sentamos en círculo cantando canciones y comiendo un clásico australiano: el «fairy bread». Para quienes no lo sepan, el «fairy bread» es un clásico de las fiestas australianas en el que se unta mantequilla en una rebanada de pan y luego se moja en un cuenco con confeti de colores. Al llegar al final de nuestro Shabbaton, nos dieron algo de tiempo antes de la cena para hacer las maletas y prepararnos para partir tras nuestra actividad nocturna. Luego cenamos, a lo que siguió el emotivo servicio de Havdalá. No hay nada como la Havdalá con un grupo de adolescentes que cantan y se balancean juntos dando la bienvenida a la nueva semana y, en este caso, preparándose para el nuevo año. Por último, para cerrar nuestro increíble fin de semana, ¡fuimos de excursión en patines! Fue una oportunidad súper divertida para mí de aprender una nueva habilidad y divertirme con mis nuevos amigos antes de tener que despedirnos. Aunque las despedidas siempre son agridulces, esta estuvo llena de abrazos y de intercambiar datos de redes sociales con todos. Todos estábamos muy emocionados por seguir en contacto y volver a reunirnos pronto. Tras pasar otra noche en Melbourne en casa de un amigo, llevaron a los chicos de otros estados al aeropuerto para que regresaran a casa y se prepararan para Rosh Hashaná. 

Although short, BBYO Australia’s first ever National weekend was an incredible experience filled with fun and truly meaningful experiences. We all made so many new friends and got to experience how special it is to celebrate Shabbat altogether. We are all super excited for the numerous national conventions that are yet to come!
